Le Mot (or “The Word”) was a French magazine publication printed from August 1914 to 1915, designed by Jean Cocteau.
After he was unable to enlist in the French army to fight in World War I, Cocteau partnered with illustrator Paul Iribe to publish this journal which focused on French nationalist and anti-German sentiments about the war. The imagery featured in Le Mot became widely known among propaganda of the era. Though the publication only lasted for 20 issues, Le Mot gained popularity in France, growing from bi-weekly to weekly releases, and established the visual canon by which many Europeans depicted Germans in wartime media.
Included are images from selected magazine covers as well as illustrative spreads.
