1

This poster is presents the work of Carington Bowles, formatted into a red poster master frame, for the commercial retail of people who visited  Colonial Williamsburg. Carington Bowles (1724-1793) was a British publisher and printer throughout the 18th century. In 1782, he used the mixed media between line engraving and watercolor to create a Hotch Potch Poster of peoples bodies contorted to resemble English letter forms, as depicted in the poster to the right.  The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation eventually was able to acquire this poster and add it to their collection. Then in 1987, the Colonial Williamsburg foundation released multiple prints of this Hotch Potch poster turned Poster Master, with the tag of Williamsburg as a footer to the poster.
