Originally known as “Florida Review” in the 1930's, the quarterly magazine was written by students at the University of Florida and transitioned into the "Orange Peel" in 1941. The Orange Peel gained nationwide recognition as the top college humor and satire magazine in the country, featuring edgy campus satire and cartoons by illustrator, Don Addis, who would become a notable editorial cartoonist. Due to its risqué content that stirred controversy, university administration was prompted to intervene in 1962 and renamed the magazine the “New Orange Peel” and took over publication. The move to clean up the magazine by the university was met with opposition from students as they launched their own publication known as the “Old Orange Peel” magazine to “preserve” the spirit of the original. Both versions of the “Orange Peel” magazines would cease publication in the mid-1960's.
