The World of Pooh

5

This is a compilation book of many classic Winnie the Pooh stories. It features illustrations throughout the text, some are small, black and white drawings that break paragraphs to show action, and others are full page, full color images. The book is 9 x 6.5 inches. The cover is very minimal; it features Christopher Robin and the animals in a line surrounded by negative space, with one character floating up holding a large balloon. This object was made using hard cover book binding techniques in the United States in 1957. It is made out of paper and cardboard. This was meant to be read and there is some wear on the spine and a little separation of the inside covers. The book is both utilitarian and symbolic, because it combines its function, to be read, with illustrative visual elements that were made to represent the meaning in the text. This object has social and cultural value because of the character’s status as a cultural icon. Books like this often have a sentimental value as well, because they are passed down through generations, just like how my grandmother passed this book down to me. This book’s cover is very minimal, with silhouettes of the characters for easy recognition and to keep the focus on the illustrations within the text.
