Alabama License Plate (1992)

6

Simple and efficient, this license plate design was adopted by Alabama in 1992. It sports a white backing and predominantly blue text and decor - the state name ties into the design in the implied lines drawn between the lettering and lines, making it truly pleasing to the eye. The tagline “Heart of Dixie” is written in red directly beneath it, with a small heart in the center. Like other license plates in the 90s and early 2000s, the license numbers are embossed, protruding from the plate, the same blue as the state name. The typeface used for the license numbers uses rounded lines and softer corners than later iterations. This license plate would have been easy to read from a distance - the lack of decoration and distinct contrast allows the shapes and lettering within to be easily understood, thus efficiently putting function before form. The plate is six inches tall and twelve inches wide, as per passenger vehicle standards.
