Probe | Parker Bros | 1977

Parker Brothers developed Probe in the 1960s. It is like the simple two-player game Hangman, in which the goal is to guess a word chosen by another player by disclosing particular letters. Ted Leavitt, a former salesperson, ship's purser, actor, World War II Marine veteran, and theatrical producer, got upset with some of the restrictions he perceived in Scrabble and created Probe expressly to overcome them. To bring his completed work to the notice of Parker Brothers, he solicited the help of his uncle, the renowned French conductor Pierre Monteux. Parker Brothers' vice president enjoyed classical music; Leavitt attracted him to Maine that summer, when his uncle was directing the London Symphony Orchestra, by providing him the opportunity to meet Monteux.
