Hanafuda was originally a game that was played among only upper class women. Then it was popularized among common women once the cards were wooden printed. In meiji era, hanafuda has became popular among men and women as “Hachi-Hachi Hana-huda”. It was so popularized that it spread across Japan and even overseas and it was called the "king of national leisure".
