Playing cards has become popular during Taisho period as a cool trend that has Westernized taste. The economy was blooming due to Japan's victory in the World war one and people wanted to do something that has modern taste and bright. In big cities like Tokyo, there were more nuclear families than ever and the life in the city suited playing cards that were considered cool and trendy rather than “hanafuda”.
