About the Negro
This little book is like a “Ripley’s Believe it or Not” for Black culture. Ahmed Samuel Milai (best known as Sam Milai) was an early African American comic strip artist, which you can see reflected in the layouts, portraiture style, and lettering. (More about Milai.)
Included in the book is Charles C. Dawson, one of the first prominent African American graphic designers, whose packaging work for Valmor is also in Letterform Archive’s collection.
