This button was created in the 1960's to support the strikes in protest to improve low wages and bad working conditions of mainly migrant farm workers in the Southwestern United States. The National Farm Workers Association (NFWA) was a labor union founded in 1962 by Mexican-American Cesar Chavez, along with Dolores Huerta and others. Cesar Chavez's brother, Richard Chavez, designed the logo to represent the organization, using a bold Aztec eagle to represent the strength, pride and dignity of the Chicano people.
This pin was found while researching Protest Design in a Graphic Design History class and shows the power of design in creating symbols that represent ideals, values and important movements in time.
