Museum Tags: Second Movement (Overture)

A series of museum tags designed for guests to the 1993 Whitney Biennial at the Whitney Museum of American Art, modeled after the usual proof of admission tags museumgoers would wear inside. These tags displayed part of or the entire phrase “I can't imagine every wanting to be white.” This piece proved to be quite polarizing, drifting from Martinez's intent of juxtapositioned commentary on the overt whiteness of art and artists featured in museums. Instead, people took offense, saying that the tags were fascist and making those who are white out to be bad simply because they are white.
