The liberation of women is a basic requirement for the revolution.

This poster shows Black women and girls partaking in varied roles such as political activism, soldiers, and workers. It includes a map of Africa and written within it is  the phrase “ African women suffer from double exploitation both as colonial or neo-colonial subject and women……”

I find it interesting that the phrase also mentions how women have been subjected to secondary roles such as childbearing, taking care of the household, and agriculture, depriving them of participation in political, social, and cultural work.

You also notice it includes a quote from Carmen Pereira who was a female politician in Guinnea-Bissau, a Portuguese colony.  She says “ In Guiennea-Bissau, we say that women have to fight against two colonialisms. One of the Portuguese, the other of men.”  Breaking through patriarchal barriers, Pereira's revolutionary leadership and ascension to Acting President set a groundbreaking precedent for women's political participation across Africa. Over 30 years in high office, she paved space for future female leaders through her shining example of capability and perseverance against gender biases.
