This is a frame from the movie Ocean Waves, from one of Japan's greatest animation studios, Studio Ghibli in 1993. Although Studio Ghibli is famous for its world-renowned director Hayao Miyazaki, this movie was created by his apprentices in Studio Ghibli. After creating Porco Rosso in 1992, Hayao was persuaded by Suzuki Toshio, a Ghibli producer that he let the young upcoming artists get the chance to create their movie since they could bring more young and fresh energy to a new Ghibli film. Many young prodigies such as the director who would go on to create many Japanese animations, Tomomi Mochizuki, as well as the soul character designer for Ghibli Katsuya Kondo as the production producer worked on this film.
The film follows the story of the high schooler Taku Morisaki and his one-sided crush on a transfer student named Rikako Muto. Some years after they graduate from high school, they coincidentally meet at Kichijoji station in Tokyo. This iconic scene led many Ghibli fans to visit the exact spot illustrated in the movie.
