Back in the day, the native African designer expressed his visual communication and art in general through emotions. These are the Adinkra symbols of West Africa, specifically Ghana. Some of the Adinkra symbols were drawn out of the emotions of Kofi Adinkra, the designer, and were thought to express his sorrow, as was the practice of the people of Gyaman in those days.
Depending on the emotion, a symbol was drawn. Some of the symbols date back to 1818 through the 1900's.
