Originally established in 1673 as Echigoya, a kimono trader, Mitsukoshi evolved into Japan's first department store in 1904 and eventually became a symbol of modernity, with the country's first elevator installed in a new structure constructed in 1914. This poster, which was shattered in the 1923 earthquake, declares the "completion of recovery construction." It has the modernist lines of the new Mitsukoshi building, the recognizable entryway lions, and contemporary women dressed in kimonos.
