Heller Packaging Program

Although Massimo and Lella Vignelli are considered the power couple of graphic design, Lella, an accredited architect and designer, was often not credited for her contributions to their work, and only Massimo's name would be on display. Before Massimo passed away in 2013, he wrote a book entitled Designed by: Lella Vignelli, a magnum opus of his wife’s many contributions to modern design. The Vignellis worked in the Swiss or international typographic style, characterized by clean lines, modern fonts like Helvetica, and simple yet impactful visuals, demonstrated by the Heller package program. Heller, a design-conscious furniture and dishware company, maintained a strong brand identity with simple, bright orange lettering on white corrugated cardboard that would be the same size, no matter the dimensions of the box, emphasizing clarity, readability, and functionality. In addition to designing Heller's packaging, the Vignellis also drafted some of Heller's furniture and "Hellerware" plates and dishes.
