In the early 20th century, it became popular among the housewives to use cotton flour bags and feed sacks for making clothes, curtains, pillowcases and other household items. To attract more consumers to buy their feedsacks, especially during the Great Depression, companies started to design colorful patterns on their sacks instead of a plain sack with their company logo. The image above as an example of a beautifully designed feed sack from the 1930s.
