Woman Bathing Hashiguchi Goyo 橋口 五葉

Taisho 4 (1915), October

Published 1916, Febuary

This is a print Goyo produced with the publisher Watanabe Shozaburo, who was looking for a Japanese artist trained in Western-style painting, wanted to create a new color printing style. This piece showcases a traditional Japanese woman with modern renditions. Apparently Goyo was hesitant about Watanabe's new take on ukiyo-e, and destroyed the fifty copies he received.
