“Die Rote Kinderrepublik” translating to “The Red Children’s Republic” was a book written by Andreas Gayk, and whats featured in this picture is the illustrations of the book (specifically the cover), done by Richard Grune. This book focuses on and tells the story of the first children's republic, which took place in Seekamp near Kiel in 1927.

For the first time, 2,300 workers' children went to a large tent camp for four weeks, with some of the rules of their coexistence in the "republic" being decided by the children themselves through camp parliaments. By 1933, a total of 35 children's republics had taken place in Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Denmark and France with 35,000 participants.
