Anthropomorphic Pectoral
This is an example of typical art from the pre-columbian Tolima culture, now located in central Colombia. Tolima high quality gold was forged with the same techniques as other pre-columbian goldsmiths. Their metalwork in particular was very flat and level, often marked by geometric patterns. Geometric shape was also evident in the abstraction of the human body when creating similar metalwork. This piece in particular, a pectoral or chest plate, demonstrates parallel and diagonal lines engraved through the thin sheet of metal. Another notable feature is its anthropomorphic subject matter. The culture often created pectorals like this one, many using zoomorphic motifs even in jewelry such as necklaces, pendants and earrings.
