The Aurora - SIGMA GAMMA RHO

​​The Aurora serves as a newsletter for Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. This specific image illuminates the celebration of their 50 years since being founded in 1972. The seven hands represent the seven founders of the sorority. These hands hold the sorority Greek letters and flags that exemplify their mission for education, sisterhood, service, and progress. In this image, it is noticeable that everything in this issue seems to be hand drawn including the text. It helps to illuminate the rest of the image that is drawn of the hands with its blocky letters. You can notice it is handwritten as the letters do not repeat in style and it seems to give more of a personal approach to the text. We can see the only thing in color is the 50 to showcase the 50 years of exemplification and to add a pop of color to the page. 

In the second image, we see the most recent issue of The Aurora that features recently added honorary member Fantasia for their 100-year edition. Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. was founded at Butler University on November 12th, 1922. This sorority is one of the Divine Nine historically African American sororities and fraternities under the National Panhellenic Council. The text in this piece is more structured and not handwritten compared to its earlier counterparts. While the older text seems to give a more personal and artistic look with its writing the 100-year edition is written in what we can see to be Bedoni typeface. This typeface is used more in magazines and seems more sleek. The smaller writing is the scene in a Futura typeface and is supposed to look like a kind of script. Easy to read it is slightly ironic for this context as the sorority is based upon scholarship and education so the font seemingly mimics this value through appearance.
