This advertisement for the Photostat machine was published in 1913 in the Engineering News publication and uses an illustration of the machine as well as text to emphasize the product as being useful to anyone for the purpose of document re-production. The lack of color ensured the advertisement was easily printable and the use of a serif typeface creates a factual and serious tone to underline the practicality of the technology.

I would assume lack of color in this ad is just due to the restrictions of the magazine it was printed in. They didn't want to or couldn't afford to get a color ad. We are unable to tell from the PDF this came from because it was scanned in black and white.
