MAVO was formed in union to create a Japanese Western-style art established by Tomoyoshi Murayama. There were four former Futurists included: Masamu Yanase, Kamenosuke Ogata, Shuzo Oura, and Shinro Kadowaki. They created work that protested against the Japanese art establishment, and influence many Japanese commercial, visual, and political culture and art.
They sought to transform Japanese art in response to the rise of industrialism, and associated themselves with other movements such as futurism or dada. Through their magazine, they included essays on art, poetry, and theatrical texts along with original linocuts and graphic works.
