King County (Seattle Washington) logo  redesign from 1971 by Mits Katayama, who was paid $1000

According to the local news, this logo updated one from the 1950s for legibility from a distance. After it was released, in the 1980s, residents began to wonder why Seattle was named for a slave holder from Alabama and the city was renamed for Martin Luther King, Jr.  However, a new logo representing MLK wasn't created until 2007.
