Der Eigene Issue 3 Cover

672

Der Eigene, originally launched in 1896 in Berlin, Germany, was a gay periodical founded by Adolf Brand. The publication, which initially started as an anarchist journal, evolved over its 36-year run to focus on the acceptance of bisexual and homosexual men. This 1899 issue became the periodical’s first entirely gay volume. The magazine, whose title translates to "the own," played a significant role in Queer history by openly catering to homosexual readers and being the first of it’s kind to do so.
