Ben Day: A guide book for Advertisers, Agencies, Artists, and all those who are interested in the art, preparation and use of Shading Tints
The Ben Day process was the only method by which tints and patterns could be applied to printed items from the late 1800s to around the 1950s; it continued to be used for years afterwards. The process is labor intensive and required skilled craftspeople to prepare material for the Ben Day production artists and to process it afterwards. This advertising booklet for Jahn & Ollier Engraving Co. demonstrates and explains this nearly forgotten part of graphic-design production for ads, comics, and illustration. (Believed to be from the 1930s, the work lacks the copyright notice required at the time and is thus in the public domain.)
