Museo de Oro

David Consuegra designed this logo for the Museo de Oro in Bogota, Colombia.  The geometric pattern used mirrors pre columbian artifacts including sculptures and textiles.  It is something easily recognizable despite being so minimalistic due to his strategic use of visual motifs in pre-columbian indigenous artwork.  Representing rich Colombian culture through indigenous-inspired design is what makes the logo communicate effectively.  This connects well with the purpose of the institution Museo de Oro, or the “museum of gold”, to display regional archeological artifacts.

Bauhaus’ influence on Consuegra’s work is made evident through his ability to abstract and focus on shape and color.  In the late 50s he studied fine arts at Boston University where he discovered graphic design and worked closely with notable designers such as Paul Rand. Bauhaus at this time had a strong influence on American design, which left a strong impact on Consuegra’s work.  A critical aspect of Bauhaus ideology and technique was in mass production, the main outcome of industrialization at the time. Simplicity in design work is a key example of form following function, efficient and fast production.
