Testing the limits of what could be mailed via USPS, in 2012 a company was founded in Portland, Oregon around the concept of sending large, cardboard penises to addresses through US mail. Ship-a-Dick founder Chester Lindgren spent time creating many prototypes to try to figure out what exactly could be sent according to USPS regulations.³
The idea of mailing dick-shaped cardboard really caught on and created a market for itself almost immediately thanks to media exposure; the company found itself having to quickly scale up production which was a learning experience.
Through a variety of products centered around this concept including a lot of apparel and accessories spinoffs, Ship-a-Dick used a fun and playful approach to graphic design to launch a successful novelty company - and it's still around and has spawned other companies adopting the same concept. ¹
