Industrialization creates a need for Brand Identity
In this image, we are looking at a Plakatstil poster from 1905. The German School of Poster Design, Plakatstil, meaning “poster style,” was characterized by simple visual signs and shapes. Lucien Bernhard, a German graphic designer created this poster, considered the first example of true Platkatstil. This poster won a poster competition for the Prister match company. This poster was created during the Second Industrial Revolution. This poster was simple with just the brand’s name in bright colors and matches on a black background.
One impact of industrialization on the design industry’s social and cultural systems was the need for businesses to develop identities and branding. Industrialization led to the growth of large corporations, all needing a distinct logo identity. This is where graphic design history is made and plays a crucial role in creating designs representing these corporate businesses.
