Book From The Sky

Book From the Sky is a vast work compiled from multiple books and scrolls containing invented characters that are Chinese-adjacent.  The texts are printed from ink on carved wood type. The incomprehensible and illegible work pushes viewers to further look into the meaning of an unreadable text.  Bing explores and pushes the boundaries of how written text is integrated into culture, as well as its power to manipulate when distorting original meaning.  The work is heavily influenced by Xu Bing's Chinese background and experiences during the suppression of the 1989 democratic student movement.
