Thirty-Six Scenic Poems of the Royal Summer Villa: Volume II (御製避暑山莊三十六景詩 : 二卷, Yu zhi bi shu shan zhuang san shi liu jing shi : er juan)
This image is part of a printed poem and pictures collection by the Emperor of China, Qing Kangxi. Inspired by his annual visit to the Royal Summer Villa, Emperor Kangxi wrote 36 poems on the architectural style and scenery of the Royal Summer Villa. The woodblock prints of the landscapes illustrate the ethereal sceneries of the summer villa whereas the printed Chinese characters depict the poems corresponding to the printed landscapes.
This poems and pictures collection exemplified how early printed books influenced the current Chinese design practice. As the poems are printed and read in up to down, right to left format, it contributes to how Chinese characters are arranged from top to bottom, right to left in many Chinese product and poster designs today. The intricate style of the printed landscape is also commonly used in illustration in Chinese product packaging like old Chinese medicines and ointments which mimics the wood-block printing style.
