Amnesia: The Dark Descent

Amnesia: The Dark Descent, was the first in the series of Amnesia games created by Frictional Games.  At the time of its release, it was known as one of the most horrifying games ever created.  The character is trapped in an old castle with horrifying monsters chasing them, and on top of it all, no memory. As the story progresses, the character remembers their increasingly haunting memories.

The game is praised for the thin line between player and the game, established by a focus on vision and hearing and realistic effects. It also introduced new concepts, such as hiding in the darkness and the sanity meter. The player had to keep “fear" below a certain level to not risk their character losing their mind. The style was refreshing and creative, leading to continuing success today with the rest of the series: Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs (2013), Amnesia: Rebirth (2020) and Amnesia: The Bunker (2023).
